Making the 24K & Titanium Galaxy Box

Spinning the Titanium Galaxy vessel was a particular challenge. Designing the piece with a depressed center demanded a complete reversal in direction of very thin sheet. Three metal mandrels were required. The final fit is very precise. In fact, a slight vacuum is felt when opening.

The center disc is a copper enamel with 24K Pure Gold granulation. The thick black vitreous enamel has been hand stoned through seven firings to smooth and flatten.

Each Gold sphere was formed individually. Tiny snippets of gold were melted one at time and rolled down a smooth charcoal block. They solidified as they fell, spinning through the air into cold water. Working from the Encyclopedia of Galaxies they were each set in place with agar(glue), and kiln fired at 1500°F until the balls settled into the supple enamel surface. Each bead is locked in place by the hardened glass enamel.
